Codec

The device or software that compresses and decompresses audio and video for a call.

A codec (coder-decoder) compresses outgoing audio and video for transmission and decompresses incoming streams. In meeting rooms, "codec" is also used for the dedicated conferencing appliance that runs the call.

Traditional room systems used standalone hardware codecs. Today the same role is typically performed by a certified Microsoft Teams Rooms, Zoom Rooms or Webex device running the platform's software.
