Plenum-rated cable is cable with a jacket listed for installation in plenum spaces — areas used for environmental air, such as above many dropped ceilings — where lower flame spread and smoke generation are required by electrical codes.
UL lists communications cable by application: CMP for plenum spaces (tested to NFPA 262), CMR for risers and CM for general use. In New York City, electrical work is governed by the NYC Electrical Code, which is based on NFPA 70 with local amendments; requirements for a specific space are confirmed with the project's electrical design and the Department of Buildings.
